For The Love Of Legends and Wood Sprites

Hello Everyone! I am more than excited to show you my creation for this super cool blog tour.  So before I get ahead of myself and start showing off, welcome to the For The Love Of Legends Blog Tour!

I try to participate is as much of CraftingCon as I can every year so when I had the chance to sign up for this blog tour I literally jumped for joy.   The love of legend colors our childhood and for many of us rolls into adulthood.  I remember trying to pronounce abominable snowman or chasing lighting bugs and pretending they were fairies.  The leprechaun at the end of the rainbow was always just out of reach and I spent so much time underwater hoping for a glimpse of a mermaid. As an adult, I can’t change the channel away from an episode of Chasing Bigfoot and I can get caught in hours of internet surfing at the sighting of a giant squid or a possible mermaid. Legends are fun and so I have decided to participate in the love of legends.

Now to be absolutely honest, I owe this inspiration to Alyssa over at Keep Calm and Carrion. I definitely reached out to her in a panic because I couldn’t narrow anything down.  She suggested a wood sprite or fairy and I instantly knew that it was the perfect choice.  There is a poem by Robert Frost called The Road Not Taken that has been a major inspiration to my life.  I love making the less popular choice and striving to achieve more than I was tasked.  I walked my own path and I hope my children do the same.  And that makes all of the difference….

Now we live in Washington state and it is home to some of the most spectacular forests and scenery anyone has ever seen.  But instead of driving her to the woods like I originally planned, she asked to take the pictures in front of her school.  We live in an extremely urban area and so parent volunteers and some like minded students began working on creating gardens around the school.  Both Bubba and Bug are heavily involved and love watching their creations grow.  So she really is a wood sprite for these plants.  And she loves finding the first flowers to bloom and seeing all of the spring growth.

The wood sprite is a spirit that lives in the woods and protects them at all costs.  There are many different adaptations, some cool and some creepy, and of course there is the familiar version from the famed movie Avatar.  Bug’s dress is made of some cool earthy looking fabrics I found in the bottom of my stash (they are probably from Walmart, let’s be honest) and I think it fit the scene perfectly.

For the bodice of her dress, I used the top of the Bateau Garden Dress by Winter Wear Designs.  I just love this dress so much and I think the bodice has such a classic shape on her. I am also a big fan of the side zipper. It doesn’t seem to bother her as much and it is easy to hide when my zipper skills are out for lunch.

For the bottom of the dress, I wish I had been more intuitive and taken photos during the process but I will try to explain it as best as I can.  First things first, the idea was completely copied from the Tinkerbell dress by Made for Mermaids. I love the princess collection, they are genius!  But alas my big girl was bigger than the biggest size so I couldn’t just use the pattern.  I basically cut out giant squares and used the top of the circle skirt from the Bateau to create a waist.  I had to use the box pleats from the Bateau to ensure that it would fit on my bodice.  With a little finagling and some creativity my sprite was born.  I thought about hemming my handkerchief edges but the dress was already a little short for her so I whipped up a pair of boy shorts from the Bonny Leggings pattern which always gives me such a great fit.  And then she could just play!
